Is COVID-19 Worsening Your Addiction?

Written by: Carli Simmonds
covid-19-and-addiction

If you already have a substance abuse disorder, the added pressures brought about during the pandemic magnify any underlying issues and make it hard to maintain sobriety and clean living. Additionally, many centers remain closed due to shutdowns related to COVID-19, making it hard to find treatment during the pandemic. At our Kentucky rehab, we remain open to providing drug and alcohol rehab services for our clients in Kentucky and across the country.

COVID-19 and Addiction

Many drugs, including legal and illicit ones, disrupt lung and heart function. So, if you use cocaine, methamphetamines, or smoke, you have a higher chance of developing extreme respiratory conditions following a coronavirus infection than someone who doesn’t use drugs.

When your body becomes infected with the virus, your immune system reacts to counter it. This often causes inflammation in parts of the body, such as the lungs. If your immune system and body are compromised due to long-term drug use or alcoholism, the chances of a negative outcome increase dramatically.

Consider checking into an addiction treatment center that observes all the safety precautions released by the Centers for Disease Control and other organizations. At our Kentucky rehab, we take every possible precaution to preserve our clients’ health and safety. Also, we insist on the highest standards of psychiatric and medical care.

An Inundated Health Care System

Hospitals and clinics continue to fill with no uniform standard of care. Your drug or alcohol addiction puts you at a higher risk of contracting the disease, and you face stiff competition for attention if you do develop a severe respiratory condition.

To reduce your chances of contracting the disease, consider entering a substance abuse treatment program that also helps you build your physical health. Our nutrition counseling program encourages you to eat healthy foods during recovery and beyond. Our fitness program also includes wilderness therapy, which can help you connect to the outdoors without increasing your risk of contracting coronavirus.

Addiction and COVID-19 are a bad combination. Come to our Kentucky rehab for treatment and take yourself out of that equation.

Finding Good Treatment During the Pandemic

With a healthcare system filled with coronavirus victims, now is the time to put your health first. If you have a substance use disorder, you may face discrimination in a triage situation. The community systems you rely on to maintain sobriety may no longer operate during the shutdown.

You may relapse or slip up due to the double pressure of COVID-19 and addiction. If so, don’t let yourself fall into a downward spiral. Instead, consider checking into our men’s rehab center or women’s rehab center to regain your sobriety and recommit yourself to recovery.

How Has Social Distancing Impacted Your Recovery?

With social distancing and other tactics used to prevent the coronavirus’s spread, one-on-one conversations remain difficult. Although telehealth services are available for emergencies, you may need someone to talk to about your substance abuse.

We urge you to find Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings that might still be going on in your area. There are also online resources, including social media, where you can talk to others in recovery about how COVID-19 and addiction are impacting their lives.

Substance Abuse Treatment During the Pandemic

Don’t let COVID-19 and addiction determine your mental and physical health during the pandemic. Turn to a drug rehab center with evidence-based and holistic approaches to addiction treatment and determined medical and therapeutic staff who can put you on the road to recovery. Building your defense against COVID-19 starts with getting your substance use disorder under control. Contact our Kentucky rehab at (888) 771-8718 for more information on our services.
